5 Menu Phrases That Make AI Misclassify Your Restaurant

Most menu copy was written for guests reading it on a printed page. AI systems read the same words and form a very different conclusion about what you are. These five phrases are the ones I see push restaurants into the wrong category most often.

By Margaret Arias · Founder, The Food Architect

    Phrase 1

    "Something for everyone"

What AI reads: Generic. No defined occasion, no defined guest.

Why it backfires: AI recommends by specificity. A restaurant that fits everyone fits no one in particular — so it gets filtered out of every specific query.

Write instead: "Built for long dinners with people you actually want to talk to."

    Phrase 2

    "Authentic Italian cuisine"

What AI reads: Category claim with no signal of region, era, or kitchen point of view.

Why it backfires: Every Italian restaurant says authentic. The word collapses you into the middle of the category instead of pulling you out of it.

Write instead: "Roman-style pasta, hand-rolled daily. No cream, no shortcuts."

    Phrase 3

    "Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff"

What AI reads: Default restaurant. Could be a diner, a chain, a hotel lobby.

Why it backfires: Cozy and friendly are baseline expectations. They give AI nothing to match against vibe-based queries like 'date spot' or 'business dinner.'

Write instead: "Low light, soft music, tables spaced for private conversation."

    Phrase 4

    "Best [cuisine] in [city]"

What AI reads: SEO copy from 2018. Often distrusted as marketing language.

Why it backfires: AI weights self-claims lightly. It's looking for descriptive specificity, not superlatives — and superlatives without evidence read as noise.

Write instead: "The pasta room our regulars come back for. Open since 2011."

    Phrase 5

    "Perfect for any occasion"

What AI reads: Occasion-blind. Disqualifies you from occasion-based recommendations.

Why it backfires: Guests ask AI by occasion — anniversary, business lunch, first date, group dinner. A restaurant that claims every occasion ends up matching none of them confidently.

Write instead: "Anniversary dinners, quiet birthdays, the table you book when it has to go right."

    The pattern underneath

Every phrase above fails for the same reason: it describes a restaurant in general, not this restaurant in particular. AI systems recommend by matching specific guest constraints against specific restaurant signals. The more generic your copy, the fewer queries you fit — and the queries you do fit are the low-intent ones.

Specificity is not a style choice. It's the unit AI uses to decide whether to name you.

Don't guess which of yours are doing this

Before you rewrite a single menu line, find out what AI currently says about your restaurant. The Guest Read shows you the occasions AI would recommend you for, the ones it wouldn't, and the specific phrases on your site pulling its interpretation off-center.
